About ALS

ALS is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease resulting in gradual total paralysis and the inability to speak, eat and breathe without assistance.

You can help ALS patients continue to share their lives with their loved ones another day through your generous contributions.

Did you know?

  • Every 90 minutes someone in the US is diagnosed with ALS
  • More people die each year of ALS in the US than AIDS
  • There is no cure for ALS
  • The average life expectancy is 2-5 years
  • Every 90 minutes, another person dies of ALS
  • Patients require 24/7 skilled in-home care, costing over $100,000 per year

In-home care extends life expectancy…

  • One more birthday
  • A child's graduation
  • Hope for another day

Deacon Loris Buccola

Silverton resident; died of ALS Dec. 2006

Loris had an army of over 30 volunteers providing regular care. He recognized that not everyone with ALS is fortunate to have such a great support system.

Loris served as a spiritual leader to thousands during his 35 years of service. He was the first person to enter the permanent diaconate in the Archdiocese of Portland.

Loris was presented with Mount Angel Seminary's prestigious Lumen Gentium Award, meaning "light for the nations." Loris continues to inspire those who knew him. Please join all of Loris' friends at the benefit event, in remembrance of the great man he was.

Walk to Defeat ALS

Rob Chadwick

Diagnosed with ALS is September, 2007

Rob, of Scotts Mills, was diagnosed with ALS in September of 2007, at age 35. Like Loris, Rob is fortunate to have a strong support system, with friends and family close by. Not everyone does.

Rob is an ALS patient advocate, traveling to Washington DC to lobby congress for more research funding for a cure. He has raised over $30,000 for the ALS Association to provide critical patient care assistance, benefiting the approximately 400 people with ALS living in Oregon.

Together with friends and family, Rob is coordinating the Silverton First Friday to Fight ALS event, in honor of Loris Buccola.

Please help Rob raise much-needed funds to extend the quality, and duration of life for those battling with ALS.
